A Quartet Dominate Early Play

Four teams have burst out to undefeated starts after the season's first series. Durham and Louisville are pacing the AL East while Dover has begun to distance itself in the NL North and Charleston is dusting the AL South.

Durham Bombers (4-0)

White-hot bats have paced the Bombers, who are doing everything needed to earn the nickname this season. Durham has scored 50 runs in four wins paced by George Gipson's three homers and Rich Gross' nine RBI and .400 average. Uber-stud Albert O'Neil lit up Boston pitchers for a .450 average, slugging .950 with two home runs and four doubles.

Louisville Big Browns (4-0)

Starters Sidney Price and Pep Long combined for 15 innings and two wins against Iowa City, allowing only two earned runs and 13 hits. Vicente Rijo is three for three in save chances, allowing only a solo blast in 2.1 innings; while Juan Nieto has paced all Big Browns' hitters with a .500 average, two SBs and three runs scored. Victor Lockwood has three hits this season, all solo home runs.

Dover Destoryers (4-0)

The Destroyers laid waste to Burlington in a four-game tilt to open S6, outscoring the Mountaineers 28-4, highlighted by fourth starter Hal Costello's eight innings of three hit ball in which he struck out eight. James Coppolecchia's three homers and five RBI lead the team, while Amp Garcia has 4 RBI and two homers and reigning NL MVP Johan Chouinard is hitting .385 with five runs scored.

Charleston Gray Ghosts (4-0)

Jackson fans may not believe in ghosts, but they'll be checking the tapes to see exactly what blew through the Southern Law Disciples to open the season. The answer, of course, is Walt Howell and his Charleston mates, who scored 29 times in the opening series, led by the third sacker's .412 average, six runs and seven RBI. Geraldo Navarro, Sid Boyd and Derek Hayes chipped in four RBI apiece; and reliever Justin McCorley appeared in three games, notching a win and holding Jackson scoreless in five innings.
